'Digital Luthiers and AI Tools' Workshop

This speculative design workshop will continue discussions on new interface design and AI and question how text-to-image generators can be used as a creative tool in the co-design process of NIMEs. This workshop will use AI tools through the lens of a digital luthier and will question how AI-rendered images can directly influence new instrument designs, question how we imagine the future design of NIMEs to look like and provide a space for speculative design of new interfaces.

Rapid technological advancements in generative AI has resulted in public access to programs such as DALL-E 2 and Midjourney which allow users to generate their own images, artworks and graphic designs online. These programs will be used in the workshop and are free and available to use to anyone online, making the process of designing instruments open to all and creates an affordable way to create discussion, speculation and ideas around the future of interface design.
